Carlsbad definitely tops the list of our favorite drive-to destinations. Jim and I stay at Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort in the heart of Carlsbad Village as often as we can.

On a recent visit, we hopped on the COASTER (the Carlsbad station is within walking distance of the resort) and cruised down to San Diego. You can drive the I-5 in 40 to 60 minutes, but riding the COASTER from Carlsbad to San Diego is much more scenic and more fun!
