Basic Info

Home to Bob Hope, beautiful desert scenery and some of the world's best golfing, Palm Springs is one of the country's most famous desert retreats.
- ResorTime.com

"A tourist destination since the late 19th century, Palm Springs had already caught Hollywood's eye by the time of the Great Depression. It was an ideal hideaway: Celebrities could slip into town, play a few sets of tennis, lounge around the pool, attend a party or two, and, unless things got out of hand, remain safely beyond the reach of gossip columnists. But it took a pair of tennis-playing celebrities to put Palm Springs on the map. In the 1930s actors Charlie Farrell and Ralph Bellamy bought 200 acres of land for $30 an acre and opened the Palm Springs Racquet Club, which soon listed Ginger Rogers, Humphrey Bogart, and Clark Gable among its members.

During its slow, steady growth period from the 1930s to 1970s, the Palm Springs area drew some of the world's most famous architects to design homes for the rich and famous. The collected works, inspired by the mountains and desert sands and notable for the use of glass and indoor-outdoor space, became known as Palm Springs Modernism. The city lost some of its luster in the 1970s as the wealthy moved to newer down-valley communities. But Palm Springs reinvented itself in the 1990s, restoring the bright and airy old houses and hotels, and cultivating a welcoming atmosphere for well-heeled gay visitors.

You'll find reminders of the city's glamorous past in its unique architecture and renovated hotels; change and progress are evidenced by trendy restaurants and upscale shops. Formerly exclusive Palm Canyon Drive is now a lively avenue filled with coffeehouses, outdoor cafés, and bars."

Palm Springs, California is the ultimate desert playground for outdoor adventure, arts and culture, gaming and entertainment. Whether you are planning a family vacation, couple who wants a romantic retreat, or want a girlfriend's getaway...Palm Springs is "Fun in the Sun" year-round. Nestled at the base of the majestic San Jacinto Mountains, the City of Palm Springs is the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The village atmosphere has been preserved and embellished over the years. The streets, lined with palm trees, invite you to explore boutique shops, art galleries and museums while soaking up the sunshine or dining outdoors among stunning desert scenery.

Palm Springs has since been sprinkled with Hollywood stardust, where the holiday homes of stars such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball paved the way for the visionary efforts of former Mayor Sonny Bono to occur; namely, the Palm Springs International Film Festival. If that isn't enough, Palm Springs is becoming the center of "Desert Modernism," with stellar examples of mid-century modern architecture tucked throughout the community and available to enjoy.

Palm Springs offers a wealth of activities and events throughout the year. Soar to the top of Mount San Jacinto on the world famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, play a round of golf at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, or hike the ancient palm groves of the Indian Canyons. Tour celebrity and mid-century homes, attend fabulous theatre performances, or wind down with a poolside massage. In the evening, stroll the year round Villagefest, then relax with a swim under the stars. Escape to Palm Springs...experience the perfect blend of outdoor entertainment and casual relaxation.

Seafood
If you get hungry for seafood, Palm Spring's popular restaurant, Fisherman's Market & Grill, is a high-quality, and relatively inexpensive, Palm Springs family favorite.

Mexican
Las Casuelas, another great Palm Springs restaurant, features tasty and authentic Spanish cuisine.

French
This café brings a little bit of Paris to the desert, with sidewalk dining, colorful flower boxes, and a bistro menu of French and Californian favorites, such as a broiled portobello mushroom with duck confit served with a sherry sauce, and ravioli stuffed with lobster. Leisurely dining is encouraged, which allows more time to savor the well-chosen French and domestic wines.

Italian
This popular casual restaurant has been serving pizza and pasta since the 1970s. The menu lists some unusual pizzas, such as cashew with three cheeses. Daily pasta specials vary but might include red- or white-clam sauce or scallops with parsley and red wine.

American
Experience the best Palm Springs has to offer at Copley's Palm Springs. Located in the historic Cary Grant Estate, award-winning chef Andrew Manion Copley's cuisine features the finest meat, seafood, and fresh produce prepared with an innovative flair. Come enojy stunnig gardens, an inviting atmosphere, and an inventive seasonal menu, and you'll see why diners come back again and again.

French
The creation of chef-owner Bernard Dervieux, Cuistot is a big, bright, airy reproduction of a rustic French farmhouse on El Paseo's west end. The menu lists quail stuffed with sweetbreads, along with such signature dishes as skillet-roasted veal chop with mushrooms and roasted garlic, fresh Dover sole with hazelnut-lemon sauce, and handmade vegetable ravioli with white truffle oil.

Continental
Superb modern Continental dishes, such as the signature Salmon in Parchment and Duck Confit, are inspired by the flavors of France, Italy, Spain and Greece. Savor them fireside in the warmth of Europa's intimate dining room, or by trickling fountains under the desert stars.

French
You dine in a restored historical landmark, but it's no dusty schoolroom. You'll feel as if you've entered the home of a French relative who wants nothing better than to make you happy. Flemish tapestries and Louis-XV furniture sets the mood that carries through on the menu. The daily offerings are handwritten on a large board brought to your table to stand like artwork on an easel while you make your selections. Combine first-class service, good food and the intoxicating hospitality of Paul Bruggemans and you are in for a real treat.

Mexican
Hundreds of artifacts from Guadalajara, Mexico, lend festive charm to this casual restaurant, which has an expansive garden patio. Tamales and shellfish dishes are among the specialties. A special tequila menu lists dozens of aged and reserve selections, served by the shot or incorporated into one of the eatery's margaritas. There's live entertainment nightly.

Pizza
What makes a great pizza? It starts with a great oven! Ours is an authentic wood- fired masonry oven where the fire has burned constantly since the day we opened. Modern gas and electric ovens cannot produce the intense heat needed - over 800 degrees - to achieve the crispy, smoky crust that our oven provides. With dough made fresh daily in-house, our goal is to make the best pizza in the desert!

Vegetarian
Despite what the menu implies, you'll find no meat at this brightly lighted, contemporary, totally vegan restaurant. The Bali surf burger contains tempeh, lettuce, tomato, plus other fixings, but no meat.

Brazilian
Carnivores flock to this Brazilian grill and bar as much for the show as for the meat. The servers, booted and bloused to resemble gauchos, move among tables passing chunks of skewered grilled meat that they cut to order for guests. You can order beef, pork, chicken, sausage, or lamb. A salad buffet, consisting of 30 items, is also popular in this all-you-can-eat restaurant. The restaurant also serves Brazilian cocktails, plus South American beers and wine.

American
Old-fashioned ambience, complete with big booths, friendly service, an eclectic menu, and modest prices, makes this one of the most popular restaurants in the desert. Entres, which come with soup or salad, include baked salmon with a horseradish crust, chicken and wild mushroom basalmico, and wild mushroom ravioli. Portions leave you plenty to take home.

Steakhouse
The Faliis is, in one word, unforgettable. We have designed our innovative food preparations and our exquisite presentations to be one of a kind. A contemporary American steakhouse featuring dry aged mid-western beed, the freshest seafood, perhaps the best tableside Caesar anywhere and, of course, our ever-evolving fresh seasonal selections.

Italian
Locals gather at this San Francisco-style storefront restaurant for delicious food, big drinks, and a friendly welcome. The congenial bar is busy during the happy hour (Monday to Thursday), after which diners drift to their nicely spaced tables indoors and out. The long menu changes daily, but staples include homemade pasta, risotto, veal, and fish. All come with an Italian accent.

Chinese
Our restaurant is warm and inviting. Enjoy our dining room overlooking our tranquil indoor pond, unwind in our spacious bar, mingle with friends on our outdoor patio, or book a party in our VIP room. The choice is yours... Whether dining or relaxing, Wangs is the place to see and be seen!
