If you've had to stop to rest more than once on a two block walk and still haven't made it all the way up the hill or if it's the middle of July and the fog hasn't lifted all week, you may just be in San Francisco. Known for its architecturally stunning bridges and homes, and average daily temperatures that are the same in December as they are in May, the jewel of California's Bay Area, San Francisco, is a true world-class city that boasts endless international dining options, sophisticated cultural attractions and one of the most unique topographies in the world.

Public transportation is a San Francisco attraction in itself. San Francisco's famed historic
cable cars are a great way to get into the spirit of this great city and, in a town that is just one steep hill after another, they are a much better way to get to some of the best San Francisco attractions than walking.
The popular Powell-Hyde line begins at Powell and Market streets and terminates at
Victorian Park near the
Maritime Museum and
Aquatic Park. The California Street line runs from California and Market streets to Van Ness Avenue. Both of these lines feature breath-taking San Francisco views.

Make sure to also catch the Powell-Mason line, which also begins at Powell and Market, to Bay and Taylor near
Fisherman's Wharf, a must-see San Francisco family attraction. This popular section of San Francisco features street performers, fantastic seafood restaurants, the world's best sourdough bread, souvenir shops and other great shopping options, a wax museum, the
Ripley's Believe it or Not museum and much, much more. Chocolate lovers will want to make sure to visit
Ghirardelli Square, a historic chocolate factory and San Francisco's best place to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The highlight of Fisherman's Wharf, though, is
Pier 39, San Francisco's major fishing pier. Pier 39 is home to millions of barking sea lions that spend their days sunning themselves on barges right off the pier. This is also the place to catch a boat or ferry tour to Marin County or any other San Francisco Bay attraction. The Pier offers great shopping and authentic San Francisco style dining including homemade sour dough bread from Boudin's Bakery, a local favorite, and of course, the Pier 39 carousel.

San Francisco's most popular bay attraction is
Alcatraz Island, a small rocky island in the middle of the bay that holds one of the nation's most infamous federal prisons, which operated for 30 years until its closure in 1963. Alcatraz was home to some of the countries most infamous criminals including Al Capone, who resided there for more than four years. Tours to Alcatraz leave from Pier 39 but sell out quickly so purchase tickets ahead of time.

Of course, no trip to San Francisco would be complete without seeing the
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco's most recognizable landmark. The bridge can be enjoyed with a bicycle ride across it from the gorgeous
Golden Gate Park, one of the largest urban national parks in the world. While at the park, be sure to catch such great San Francisco family attractions as the Presidio of San Francisco, as well as a variety of cultural venues, historic sites and beautiful gardens.
Step into another world and catch a bit of history with a visit to
Chinatown, where the past and present are inseparably woven together like no other place in San Francisco. Shop, take in the culture and dine on the most authentic Chinese faire you'll find in the Western Hemisphere.

For a romantic San Francisco evening, head to the
Cityscape Bar & Restaurant, San Francisco's best-kept fine-dining secret. One of the city's only rooftop view restaurants, Cityscape features grand-sweeping panoramic views from atop one of the tallest buildings dominating San Francisco's famous skyline.
